Lo llamado normal

No siempre resulta atractivo ser calificado como normal. No hay duda de que puede valorarse frente a determinadas alternativas, pero resulta inquietante el uso que hacemos del término. En ocasiones nos amparamos en él y nos arropamos en el abrigo que nos procura. Quizás en este sentido hemos de comprender lo que tiene de denuncia el libro de Janette Winterson, “¿Por  qué ser feliz cuando se puede ser normal?” (Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal?). Nos encontramos con una pregunta rigurosa, no exenta de ironía, que más bien ofrece el texto de una denuncia, de una búsqueda, de una lucha, de una dura experiencia, la de labrar la propia vida en circunstancias difíciles. A veces se logra siquiera que sea un relato de ficción para sobrevivir y no ser condenado a los dictados estandarizados. No es una huída, ni un simple refugio. Es simplemente una posibilidad.

Y lo es frente a quienes desean “normalizar” las vidas ajenas y reducirlas a lo que se ofrece del modo más convencional. El título no es en este caso ninguna rendición, sino una transgresión que pone en cuestión lo que con demasiada ligereza llamamos “normal”. Y esta palabra no solo ha de ser descrita, merece prácticamente ser desenmascarada. Ante lo llamado normal se erige la voluntad de no ser sometido permanentemente al examen y a los intereses ajenos. Se precisa una tarea conjunta de recelo, de sospecha, sobre el supuesto atractivo de la normalidad.

Resulta asimismo sugerente el título de la obra en la que Canguilhem muestra hasta qué punto el término funciona como un elemento de clasificación y de exclusión. En Lo normal y lo patológico se incide en los límites de una racionalidad que expulsa de sí y califica de enfermizo y digno de tratamiento aquello que no se deja recoger y domesticar en este concepto, más aún, en la lectura dominante del mismo. Así planteado, resulta difícil no saberse normal sin sentir una verdadera amputación de los sentimientos, de los deseos, de las emociones, de las pasiones, en definitiva, de los proyectos de vida y de la vida misma. De no ser de acuerdo con esa tipificación que vincula un concepto de razón a una determinada “normalidad”, uno se haría “digno de terapia”, “de cura”.

Encontramos normal lo que es habitual o corriente, lo que responde a usos y costumbres, lo que calificamos de natural, de sano sentido común, lo que estadísticamente es frecuente, lo que, como decimos, “siempre se ha hecho así”, “siempre ha sido así”. Al supeditarnos a esa propuesta norma, este concepto produce finalmente, como es “lógico”, “gente de lo más normal”. La interiorización cobra tal alcance, que ya no es necesario mucho más para encauzar, embridar y acomodar la propia vida a lo que impera como “razonable”, que identificamos inapropiadamente como “socialmente aceptado”. La palabra queda así encerrada en un sentido preciso pero desajustado, y nace también todo un lenguaje silenciado. Más aún, que funciona como un elemento disuasorio de otras experiencias o formas de vida que, entonces, consideramos poco normales. Se califican prácticamente como una sin-razón, que merece alguna suerte más o menos explícita de internamiento o de exilio, con las correspondientes dosis de aislamiento. Se disocia la propia vida del lenguaje y sobre ciertos asuntos se pide callar. Es lo normal.

Hemos tenido ocasión con René Char de reivindicar la necesidad de desarrollar la legítima rareza, que no tanto se opone a lo normal, cuanto que pone en evidencia , incluso en ridículo, la insuficiencia de un término que se esgrime como arma de poder controlador de conciencias y de vidas mediante procesos de regulación y de simplificación. Bien lo dicen los encargados de fijar posiciones: “esto no es normal”.

La puesta en cuestión de la autoestima, cuando aquello que se puede o se decide vivir no responde a lo preestablecido como adecuado comporta dosis de marginación personal y tal vez paralice la acción. Salvo que la energía y la convicción se sobrepongan e impongan sobre lo convencionalmente asentado. Esto no significa que no quepa reconocer la necesidad de hábitos, usos, costumbres y necesidades que impulsan y cuajan la libertad, pero que pueda llegar a ser así no significa que inexorablemente haya de ser siempre de ese modo.

No pocas veces utilizamos el término “normal” para neutralizar iniciativas, posiciones y vidas, y encauzarlas interesadamente hacia modelos previamente establecidos con carácter social dominante. Ello no significa que no se den actitudes que hayamos de evitar, o dolores y sufrimientos producidos por una determinada disgregación o desagregación de uno mismo que debamos eludir, lo que es otro asunto. Para eso no hemos de desechar maneras de ser o de vivir que cuestionen lo que se propone como referencia normal.

También resulta inquietante la tendencia a apagar lo que en cada uno de nosotros no se deja reducir a modos que son moldes que marcan la identidad y la identificación, para poner a buen recaudo la diferencia o la respuesta en la que consiste la impugnación. No siempre necesitamos que sean otros quienes nos obstaculicen, nos impidan, nos contengan o nos retengan. Nuestra propia subjetividad funciona, no pocas veces, como una manera de restablecer, frente a los diversos modos de subjetivación, el imperio dominante de los valores al uso. Y no es que nos moleste ser normales, en el supuesto de que eso diga algo razonable, salvo porque consideramos no merecer quedar atrapados en el corsé normalizador.

De ahí que gestos como los de Winterson no solo son muestras de supervivencia, sino alientos que cuestionan un concepto de felicidad que se impone como coartada paralizante ante los riesgos de otras formas de vida. Entonces, llegados a este punto, no se trata de ser feliz de cualquier manera, es decir, a cualquier precio. Tal vez baste con estar razonablemente contentos. Y ser más libres.

Hope you get a laugh with this. 1) is a little inside joke that comes from a converstation with a friend of mine. He was trying to give me an idea from where Foucualt was coming from as the French thinker that he was. Friend said, basically, that a nice comment or premise of Foucalult's was a question he posed about society or the human condition: How could something founded in human rationality end up being so violent and irrational? My friend-who really didn't like Foucualt for ideological reasons-said "Foucault slaved away at his writing for 11 months of the year, and spent August in LA in a (Gay) suana". That's where the title of my future film comes from! (The comment and the film also give some explanation as to the professional name I am going to use!) PEACE

DON QUIJOTE: "Once again we've run into the cathedral wall"
Two kinds of "mentally afflicted" homeless people. One a black woman, late forties; the other a white man in his early sixties. She has good days and bad days, depending-she says- on whether she is taking her medication. But on all days she talks to herself, and what she says is intense and hostile, usually directed at a man or some authority figure like an agency or doctor. There is underlying thread of rage in her words as she rambles on about her boyfriend, family; but, when addressed she often snaps out of it, especially when the person addressing her is white and has some kind of authority over her: the people who run the homeless shelter, for example. Then she smiles and becomes more passive and can engage in coherent conversation. And, amazingly, she holds her tongue and is even strangely nice to the oblivious white woman who offers her a blanket or tells her that the shelter is closing for the night and says good luck to her in her choice of sleeping arrangements out on the street in 30 degree temperature. The homeless man, on the other hand, never sucks up to anybody: he just writes in crisp printed letters vocabulary that, lined up in columns on the sheet of paper, he will read aloud by himself or even when people are around him. He has even told me on a occasion: the intense repetition of the physical movement of moving his hand and arm from right to left across the page is a form of comfort for him. And he does this all day, day after day. He has a long grey beard and hardly ever changes his cloths: he is all "prophetic" intensity, a usually autistic zealot of homelessness. And he applies his intensity to printing and printing of words (state capitals, medical terms, ect.) and some times high school level exam questions about all sorts of things. But in both cases, in his and in hers, the intensity both are at the mercy of, have different ways of being exteriorized. And the explanation-I am pretty damn sure-as to the difference, comes from the different cultural experiences they are products of. You do the numbers and see what I am really driving at!
Oh, and one other thing: religion. She-incredibly-considers herself blessed in some way that she has never wanted or been able to explain to me. He, other hand doesn't give a rat's ass about "the fairy tale religious crap". But it both cases, their way of showing their attitude towards religion has to do with the cultural situations they come from and are still living now. And all the while, the oblivious white world of power goes out to dinner, spends their money on often meaningless products of consumer society and gets to feel "a little weight of existence" as they shudder and feel sorry for the homeless.

THE UNDERLYING PSYCHOLOGICAL PROBLEM OF MAN
His body. Regarding physical space, only one human body can occupy it at a time. And this ties directly into the individual's need for comfort; bodily and then successively more abstract, on higher levels. And it is clear then, that Man naturally lives-necessarily and always-in conflict with other individuals, ALL THE TIME. You can be polite respectful and wait your turn; or you can also KILL, impose yourself on others as a way of getting what you need and want. This is you baby, in your psychological life-mode and collective human groups-society- is a BITCH in this sense. And when this goes away, people as individuals die (and life is NOT WORTH LIVING-clearly I am talking about a personal problem that I deal with-the value of life itself-YOUR LIFE, AND OUR LIVES). And I have seen the lack of regard for others in all kinds of situations-to the point that if you are polite and "politically correct" in certain circumstances, YOU WILL BE TAKEN DOWN BY OTHERS, BY A PACK OF ENRAGED AND FEARFUL MONKEYS. And I certainly know that there are times when you have no choice BUT TO STOP COLD INDIVIDUALS AND GROUPS ANYWAY YOU CAN FOR THEY WILL TAKE A NICE PLEASANT CRAP (FOR THEM) ON YOU OR ANYTHING THAT IS IMPORTANT TO YOU. And this I know, as contemplation and as personal experience! This is the nature of people. So stop kidding yourself about DEMOCRACY; we have reached a point and circumstances where there should be no consideration for the "petty monkey crap" of callously frivolous individuals and their drive for comfort at all costs! And people need to understand this, intellectualize it, and live accordingly with INTRINSIC RESPECT for others, not respect imposed by the law or social convention.

DEMOCRACY AS A PROBLEM
What day of the year, among all the other national holidays of the European Union’s individual countries, is the “national” holiday of Europe, the day that all member countries commemorate or celebrate “European Union Day”, so that-and this is crucial-all citizens partake of the spirit of Europe as a political and social entity? The answer is that there isn’t or ever has been one. And the reason, to my eyes, has always been inexplicable; this is the first thing that governments (or headmasters!) do to show their power popularly and it is for many people the only way of truly knowing and FEELING that Europe exists and is important. Yet Europe day has never been established. Well now is your chance. And I would start by dealing with its real problem and that is democracy itself. If you are following the Cathedral model of historical evolution-construction over several generations, it does not make sense that a majority of people in France all of a sudden feel a certain distaste for “immigrants”, or that the price of bread has been portrayed as depending on factors beyond anybody’s control, leading them therefore to take out their petty frustrations of life on the political-social framework of millions of other people. No longer allow this to be something subject to whims or the manipulation by other parties! Why is European design subject to this? Because the motor of construction is, at the highest executive level, it seems, POPULAR VOTE! Imagine if Fernandez Miranda had to make decisions based on popular opinion; Spain would have gotten nowhere or at least not in the controlled and stable way Miranda sought and imposed de facto through the authority, really, of The Prince of Asutrias at that time (that is the term I prefer); I mean Juan Carlos. Such critical executive decisions cannot depend on popular vote: what is at stake is too important and people as social mass DON’T KNOW BETTER! And everybody’s eventual livelihood and security is AT STAKE. But because of Democracy, right now the European Union is on a sand bank, apparently for good! And too effect change, right now, I would, as Spain, breakaway from the EU; not regarding the EURO but as a MONARCHY AT THE EXECUTIVE LEVEL WITH A SOCIAL CONSTITUTION BELOW THAT. The rights of individuals also include security and stewardship and DEMOCRATIC GOVERNMENTS CANNOT REALLY PROVIDE THAT. The King of Spain (and/or his son) IS THE DE FACTO RULER OF THE COUNTRY EVEN NOW AS UNDERSTOOD BY THE CONSTITUTION-HE HAS THE DE FACTO POWER TO COMMAND ALL ARMED FORCES WHO OWE ALLEGIANCE PRIMARILY TO HIS PERSON AS GENERAL CAPTAIN OF THE ARMIES OF SPAIN. Things are quite clear in my view: the King has the authority to create a decision making body of individuals who owe their lives, time and vitality to THE REST OF SOCIETY through the intellectual effort required to affront the responsibility they bear. They are not elected-they are named by the King and people as a mass have ABSOLUTELY NO INFLUENCE OVER THESE INDIVIDUALS except in the form of respect for them or in the lack of it; but on that point, it is the King’s decision in his role as overseer of this executive body. Quite obviously, these individuals HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO REGARD FOR THEIR OWN PERSONAL FINANCES, FOR THE POWER MONEY GIVES-THAT IS CERTAINLY AND NECESSARILY BENEATH THEM.. But they and their families need to eat and also enjoy comfort, just like the rest of society should, too. Do people qualified in this way for a job like that exist in Spain? You're damn right!
In fact, I feel that Spain should declare itself, in its model of MONARCHY, THE ABSOLUTE GOVERNING POWER OF THE WHOLE UNION! But the point is, you have got to exclude the influence and power of popular vote over the EXECUTIVE DESIGN AND RUNNING OF PEOPLE’S VITAL-POLITCAL FRAMEWORK-IT IS TOO IMPORTANT TO LET THE MADDENING CROWED DESTROY!

Recently, you were in a Senate Hearing seated before a committee along side of Big Guy Leon Pennetta; and I tricky sort of question was posed to you by a silly right-wing senator who was clearly trying to catch you out-and he did, apparently. This man pulled out an article by the Washington Times that gave data about certain contract purchases that you said you hadn't read. In my experience in Madrid, anybody in even mid-sized companies and institutions has a staff of people who comb public media for articles that even just mention the name of the company and or the markets they operate in; a summary of these stories is then circulated among company staff. Sir: Are we really to believe that you were not even aware of this article or the data that it contained? The reason I ask is that the Silly Senator form the right seemed to gloat with satisfaction; and the truth is, Sir, you looked pretty damn stupid-AND THAT MADE ME FEEL STUPID, AS AN AMERICAN (regarding Penetta, I have nothing to say; but the Navy is of interest to me).
You will have a hand in matters regarding Calvin Walker.

I would like a full public explanation regarding the lives of the following serviceman and soldiers:
1)Bobby Hill, Lakland AFB, Texas; served from '77 to 80, or 81. Particularly I want understood publicly why he spent 10 days in a local county jail, which was recorded as A-WALL; I want all events just before and after that time in his life explained before a Senate Committee in PUBLIC SESSION of the UNITED STATES SENATE; and I want the rest of his life after that ACCOUNTED FOR BY YOU in the aforesaid manner.
2)I want Angela Christian's brother, a ranking officer close at one time to GENERAL COLIN POWELL found and I would like his life also to be ACCOUNTED FOR in the aforesaid manner.
3)I want the life of a homeless man, DEAN at BethesdaCares, also accounted for in the aforesaid manner; his parents both served and latter worked for the US MILITARY AND THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT, I believe. I demand of you that you PERSONALLY have a hand in understanding DEAN and the way he lives and exactly for WHAT REASON his parents want no part of his personal life, which is basically changing spots in different geographic points of the town of Bethesda. You will understand, study and resolve to the best of your ability the personal and bodily fright and turmoil he suffers form AS A LIFE MODE. YOU WILL DO WHAT IS NECESSARY -AND YOU WILL NOT SHIELD YOURSELF IN THE LAW AS A WAY OF NOT COMING THROUGH FOR THIS MAN.
