El primo gringo del Libor

Hay que ver la cantidad de términos y de siglas que se están colando en el lenguaje común, cortesía de la mayor crisis financiera desde la Gran Depresión. En esta especie de clase forzada de finanzas empezamos con las hipotecas subprime en EE UU, supimos de los CDO, nos enteramos de lo que son los swaps de divisas y llegamos a la prima de riesgo. La última en destacar de entre el diccionario financiero es el Libor, por la manipulación del peaje que se aplica a los préstamos entre bancos. Y no pierdan de vista la versión made in USA de este escándalo: el MMD, sigla del Municipal Market Data.

     Si se confirma lo que denuncia The New York Times, este podría ser otro de los temas de conversación del verano en Wall Street. El MMD es el primo lejano del Libor. Pero en su caso, el íncide se utiliza para calcular el tipo de interés que se aplica a la deuda local y estatal. El regulador bursátil acaba de emitir un informe en el que aborda la cuestión, aunque evita hablar de manipulación. Sí admite que el mercado de los bonos municipales, valorado en 3,7 billones de dólares, no es transparente y por eso urge una reforma para evitar abusos (el 50,2% está en manos de inversores particulares).
