Protección para la mujer mutilada

 

Cerca de 140 millones de mujeres han padecido mutilación genital (FGM en sus siglas en inglés). Dos millones de niñas sufren esta agresión cada año, seis mil cada día. La ablación y la infibulación se practican en 28 países del África Negra. En muchos de ellos es ilegal, pero esta costumbre cuatro veces milenaria se encuentra por encima de las leyes, es parte de la tradición, de las costumbres.

Ningún libro sagrado lo avala; es una práctica preislámica. Procede, al parecer, del Egipto de los faraones. En el nuevo, el posTahrir, hay miedo a un retorno.

Naciones Unidas se dispone a decretar una prohibición mundial. No será la panacea ni provocará un cambio automático, pero las ONG implicadas aseguran que es un primer paso imprescindible para mejor la lucha contra esta lacra social, esta grave violación de los derechos humanos.

Para cambiar una tradición se requiere conocimiento del terreno, apoyo local, autoridad moral, dinero, tiempo y mucha paciencia.

Somalia es uno de los países más castigados por la mutilación genital. Son las ONG locales, o mujeres como la masai Agnes Pareyio, los que deben liderar la batalla. Son las ONG locales las que deben tener toda la visibilidad. El voto de la ONU puede darles un impulso decisivo y abrir vías de financiación.
