Dieciocho personajes inolvidables
Lo más increíble de Downton Abbey es esta foto de aquí abajo. Estos dieciocho personajes. Yo jamás hubiera sospechado que, después de ver tres episodios de la serie, pudiera saber quién es quién. Y sin embargo lo sé. Los conozco a todos. De cada uno puedo contar una historia, decir quién es, qué busca, qué le ocurre.
Downton Abbey acabó su primera temporada hace dos semanas (son siete episodios) y se convirtió en uno de los éxitos más grandes de la televisión británica. Y ni siquiera es de la BBC. Es de ITV, que ya anunció que habrá una segunda entrega en 2011.
Y no es para menos, porque al capítulo séptimo (emitido el 11 de este mes) lo vieron más de diez millones de personas. Al día siguiente, el crítico Dan Sabbagh, de The Guardian, habló directamente de un renacimiento del drama comercial.
Hablemos de eso. Del drama comercial que supone esta serie. Si vamos al meollo (y me pasó mientras la veía) es un grandioso culebrón sudamericano. De esos en los que ocurren cosas entre “los señores” y “el servicio”.
Tiene todos los condimentos del culebrón: historias de amor, historias de clase, etcétera. Esa es la parte comercial. Lo que cambia es la estructura, los recursos. Y sobre todo los tiempos.
Se filma cada vez mejor para la televisión. Eso es lo que pasa. Ver Downton Abbey resulta tan placentero, tanto, que da asco. Uno se siente un privilegiado de los tiempos. El desarrollo de la trama (sin buenos ni malos) hace de este enorme culebrón victoriano una especie de Mad Men inglesito, pulcro, dulce, sarcástico, que uno no puede dejar de ver.
Cada episodio llena. Te deja con ganas de otro pero no ahora, sino mañana. Hay que dejarlos reposar. Y es verdad lo que digo al principio: te encariñas con esa gente, los conoces a todos (¡y son dieciocho!) y no hay ni una sola escena que quieras pasar de largo. Es como el clímax de las historias corales, aunque en este caso son las mujeres (las increíbles mujeres de 1912) las que se llevan todas las palmas.
¿La historia? Simple y encantadora. Pero no la voy a contar. No hace falta; ni siquiera es lo más importante de la serie. Lo importante es sentarse y verla.
Tiene 8.8 puntos sobre diez en Imdb. Tiene 8 puntos en EspoilerTV (aunque creo que por el momento solo la voté yo). Y es, sin dudas, una de las mejores producciones inglesas de este siglo. ¿Se puede pedir algo más?
Ay, britain, britain, britain... Si no fuera porque nos robaron las Malvinas, cómo querría yo a esta gente.
